While assisting in the pre-k Sunday school class yesterday, we talked about how God punishes us because he loves us. The teacher asked the children if they had ever been put in time-out for doing something wrong. One little boy raised his hand and said, "Yes! But only once." Impressed, the teacher answered, "Well, you must have really learned your lesson," to which the little boy replied, "No, I just learned my Bible."

What theology God allows children to teach us!

In the Bible study I have on Sunday nights, we were looking up the chords to play the Doxology when I stumbled upon the song from which this famous chorus had come. I always knew that there was more to this song, but had never actually read them before. Are you ever surprised at how aptly those works from ages past capture your life so much better than modern words ever could? Reading this hymn... awaken in my soul a desire to make this my life's theme song. Its newness and oldness enchant me, for it seems as though I can't read it without humming that cherished melody sung so often in childhood. The memories of then and the gentle reproach it is to my life now, make the tune savory and compelling in its own unique way.

Awake, My Soul

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
Thy precious time misspent, redeem,
Each present day thy last esteem,
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the great day thyself prepare.
By influence of the Light divine
Let thy own light to others shine.
Reflect all Heaven’s propitious ways
In ardent love, and cheerful praise.
In conversation be sincere;
Keep conscience as the noontide clear;
Think how all seeing God thy ways
And all thy secret thoughts surveys.
Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praise to the eternal King.
All praise to Thee, who safe has kept
And hast refreshed me while I slept
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake
I may of endless light partake.
Heav’n is, dear Lord, where’er Thou art,
O never then from me depart;
For to my soul ’tis hell to be
But for one moment void of Thee.
Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew.
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.
Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.
I would not wake nor rise again
And Heaven itself I would disdain,
Wert Thou not there to be enjoyed,
And I in hymns to be employed.
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

I wish for once my heart and mind
Would finally coincide
It seems that in this life of mine
They hardly can abide!

First one is off, wandering free
In the throws of romance and love
The other stalwart as can be
Focused on heavenly realms above

My mind is irked by my fervor
My heart annoyed by restrain
Yet both are in this together
Through fire or starry-crossed main

LORD, why did you give us emotion?
Father, why not just give us all brains?
Is it better to have loved at all and lost it?
I can't imagine it any other way.

Here I now stand - broken
Suddenly I feel so very cold.
Yet LORD, I know you have a purpose
And that alone makes me bold.

So Father, whatever your plan is
No matter the trials to come
I trust that my heart in your hand is
Till you lead this child safely Home.

The theme of trust and faith seem so entwined with the Bible. From verses like,

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and He will direct your paths" (Ps. 37:5) or
"Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and He shall bring it to pass" (Prov. 3:5-6), to simple doctrinal statements such as, "The just shall live by faith" (Rom. 2:17) the thesis of Christian living is a lifestyle of certainty, knowing that what God says, He will do.

This is the entire groundwork for our salvation, "We come by grace through faith" (Eph. 4:8a). I love the Bible's promises because it's not just like some vague "all will be well" inclination, but a statement that is made by the God by whom "all things consist." He knows the future, and cares for his people, he knows our "going outs and ins." Who could we trust more? His promises give me such serenity, though I forget far too often, but though my soul be troubled for a time, my soul remembers, and my soul returns to peace.

And they that know your name will put their trust in thee: for you, LORD, have not forsaken them that seek you...
